Our Research

This list features some of the best online schools in Missouri. Each school featured is a nonprofit, accredited institution — either public or private — with a high standard of academic quality for post-secondary institutions. We included liberal arts colleges and research universities as well as small, midsize, and large institutions. Next, we compared this comprehensive list to a list of aggregated college rankings from reputable publications like the U.S. News & World Report among others to simplify a student’s college search. We pored through these rankings so students don’t have to.

We limited our review to accredited higher learning institutions to ensure they meet high quality standards. The majority of the Missouri colleges on our list are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Working in a 19-state area in the north central region, the HLC is committed to holding its accredited institutions to high standards for the continuing improvement of higher education.

We evaluated each school on tuition costs, admission, retention and graduation rates, faculty, and reputation as well as the student resources provided for online students. Then we calculated the Intelligent Score on a scale of 0 to 100. Read more about our ranking methodology.

How long do you have to live in Missouri to get in-state tuition rates?

Missouri requires you to live in the state for at least 12 consecutive months prior to declaring residency. To qualify for in-state tuition, you must prove that you came to the state for a reason other than education and intend to remain in the state for the foreseeable future. This usually entails working full-time in the state for one calendar year before enrolling in college and seeking in-state tuition.

Who qualifies for reduced tuition costs in Missouri?

Missouri offers several ways to reduce your tuition costs. One is through participation in the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP), which caps tuition for out-of-state Midwest students at 150% of in-state tuition at public universities in participating Midwestern states. This can save you thousands, if not tens of thousands, on your degree.

The state also sponsors Access Missouri, a program that provides financial assistance to Missouri residents with unmet financial need who attend approved colleges and universities in the state and have an expected family contribution of $12,000 or less. Eligibility for the grant is determined based on FAFSA application data, so it’s important to file early and accurately. The FAFSA will also show if you are eligible for Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), and other financial aid awards.

We’ve reviewed a few of the most prominent financial aid options for you below:
