How Signing Up For a Bootcamp With Berkeley Boot Camps Works

Berkley Home Page

To begin the application process, prospective students can click the yellow “Apply” button in the top right-hand corner of any program’s homepage.

Application Page

To move forward, applicants must submit a short contact form detailing their full name, email address, and phone number. Additional necessary information includes the prospective student’s state/province, country of residence, and program of interest. Applicants interested in a coding bootcamp must select whether they are interested in enrolling on a part- or full-time basis.

Application Confirmation

After submitting the contact form, prospective students will be contacted by an admissions counselor for an interview. During this interview, students can expect to answer questions on their goals, motivation for attending a Berkeley Boot Camp, and career aspirations. When students pass this initial interview, they will be sent a link to continue their application.

The rest of the application process is relatively straightforward. First, applicants must complete a timed academic assessment to demonstrate their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. After passing the academic assessment, students will receive an official acceptance offer. Depending on the student’s payment plan, an enrollment deposit may be necessary to secure their spot.

A Typical Week at Berkeley Bootcamps

The Berkeley Extension campus offers part- and full-time bootcamps, and a typical week is very similar for each option. Both programs provide live, interactive lectures and a project-based curriculum. As a result, full-time students will complete their program faster. Still, part-time students can enjoy many of the same benefits — including individualized attention from instructors and personalized feedback on assignments.

Full-time students attend Monday through Friday for eight hours per day, whereas part-time students attend on weekends or weekday evenings. Actual times will depend on the student’s time zone and program enrollment. The curriculum involves daily lectures from experienced instructors, group work or pair programming, and hands-on projects.

Each bootcamp is delivered in modules that last between four and eight weeks each. This comprehensive structure allows students to learn similar skills grouped together and to build their knowledge week by week.

Additional Features

Student dashboard

Everyone who enrolls in a DataCamp Career Track gains access to a personal student dashboard to help keep them on target. The dashboard keeps track of the student’s completion stats — including their current streak and the number of courses and tracks completed. Students can also view their earned certifications and access the DataCamp job board from their dashboard.

DataCamp job board

All DataCamp students, including Basic and Premium subscribers, can access DataCamp’s job board. To get started, students need to answer questions on where they would like to work, the type of role they are most interested in, their expected salary, and their location. DataCamp then generates a list of jobs for the student to review, save, or apply to immediately.

What We Like About DataCamp

Beginner-friendly curriculum

For beginners just starting, DataCamp is a great place to be. Each Career Track, or bootcamp, begins from the ground up — anyone can start a DataCamp bootcamp with no prior knowledge or experience. And, because all students start with a free Basic subscription, it’s possible to try out multiple DataCamp bootcamps without making a financial commitment.

Flexible learning modules

Each DataCamp Career Track contains multiple learning modules conveniently divided into short, three-hour courses. Modules are entirely self-paced and consist of a prerecorded lecture and interactive exercises to help students integrate their new skills in real time. Even better, each lesson is taught by an industry professional with years of experience in their subject matter, making each module a unique learning experience.

What We Don’t Like About DataCamp

Limited career services

While many tech bootcamps provide significant career services, DataCamp only offers a few. These options — including help developing a professional portfolio and access to the DataCamp job board — are worth mentioning, but they aren’t as comprehensive as those provided by other tech bootcamps. Students seeking a bootcamp that offers interview prep, resume and LinkedIn optimization, or individualized career coaching should look elsewhere.

Misleading price structure

Although DataCamp lists its Premium monthly subscription rate as $25 per month in several places on its website, it minimizes that this price point is billed annually. The true month-to-month fee is higher. In addition, the discounted rate only applies if the student purchases an annual subscription. This may have little impact on students who were already planning to buy the yearly subscription, but the higher monthly rate of $39 may surprise students expecting to pay less per month.
